The benefit company “Cattolica Tju Research” is born to promote scientific research in the neuroscience field. The agreement for the establishment of the benefit company between the two universities was signed at the Agostino Gemelli Irccs University Hospital in Rome, by the rector of the Catholic University Franco Anelli and by the Chief Operating Officer of Thomas Jefferson University Kathy Gallagher. It will promote scientific research in neuroscience also thanks to the creation of the Brain Center “Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience at Policlinico Gemelli in Rome”, whose project began with the symbolic laying of the first stone yesterday afternoon at Gemelli.
The new company will offer scientific advice for the use of new clinical equipment, particularly in the neuroscience sector, focusing on the development of new technologies based on the acquisition and processing of neurophysiological data in humans and animals.
From the design and implementation of software that can process electrophysiological data in the neuroscience sector to research activities regarding new protocols, including basic and applicative studies, ‘Cattolica TJU Research’ will collaborate with universities, national and international bodies and institutions for the development of new lines of research. Of particular educational importance will be the promotion and coordination activity for the design and implementation of knowledge dissemination events in the neuroscience field.
The Brain Center “Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience at Policlinico Gemelli in Rome”, the result of the agreement signed on July 22 by the Gemelli Irccs Polyclinic Foundation and Thomas Jefferson University, is the ‘twin’ of the one already built in Philadelphia: will allow the carrying out of translational and clinical research on the most important diseases of neuropsychiatric interest, as well as cutting-edge treatments of various pathologies, with particular reference to brain tumors, thanks to the donation by the Farber family of a Cyberknife, a leading tool in the field of radiotherapy. Ellen Farber and Bill Farber, financiers of the institute and donors of the innovative Cyberknife, were the guests of honor at the ceremony for the signing of the agreement.
The new building, entirely dedicated to Neuroscience, will rise in front of the main building of the Gemelli and will develop over six floors. The first floor will be dedicated to radiotherapy; the second will be destined for research laboratories; another three floors will house day hospitals, outpatient clinics and neurology and neurosurgery treatment rooms; finally, the coverage plan will be destined for offices. The building is expected to be completed within two years.
The Thomas Jefferson University delegation visiting the Catholic University at the Gemelli Polyclinic was made up of Mark Tykocinski, president of the American university; Ignazio Marino, Executive Vice President for Jefferson International Innovative Strategic Ventures Tju; Robert Rosenwasser, Professor of Neurosurgery and president of the Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience; Kathy Gallagher, Coo Tju; Robert Di Stanislao, member of the Tju Board of Directors; Drew Morrisroe, member of the Tju Board of Directors; Alfred Saves, Tju Finance Vice President.
The delegations of the Catholic University and Gemelli Irccs Polyclinic, who accompanied the guests on a visit to some structures of the Polyclinic that deal with neurological disciplines, were composed of Paolo Nusiner, general director of the Catholic University and president of Gemelli Isola Spa; Marco Elefanti, general director of the Gemelli Irccs Polyclinic Foundation, and the professors of the Catholic University Claudio Grassi, president of “Cattolica Tju Research”; Alessandro Olivi and Paolo Calabresi, directors of the new benefit company, together with the deputy administrative director of Cattolica Alessandro Tuzzi.
