The Railway Network of Catalonia will have 124 new trains between 2025 and 2027. This was announced this Sunday the Ministry of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition of the Generalitat, which explained that they will be added in different rail services. “It is another step to get a higher quality public transport and reach the goal of having a country where trains leave on time every morning,” said the Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque.
Specifically, a total of 72 vehicles will be incorporated into the service of Rodalies. It is expected that these enter into operation from 2026, adding three or four trains each month. Currently, they are being manufactured at the Alstom plant of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda and will be length of 100 meters. There will be 250 sitting seats, but It will have a total capacity of more than 900 people. They will also have 12 doors on each side, eight of which will be at the level of platform to allow better accessibility in general and people with reduced mobility, in addition to bicycles, strollers or suitcases.
Another 24 trains will be used for regional services and will start operation in 2027. In this case, they are convoys manufactured by the Basque company CAF. They will have a length of 100 meters and will have 256 sitting seats. The seats will have plug and table, unlike the current ones. They will also be faster trains, with a Maximum speed of 200 km/h. In addition, all doors will be located at the platform level, which will facilitate access to everyone.
Another 14 trains will be allocated to the Railway Service of the Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC). Of these, 10 will be used for the future shuttle that will connect Barcelona and the Prat airport and four for the Rodalias service of Lleida.
Changes for the Mediterranean corridor
Within the framework of the works of the Mediterranean corridor, it is planned that in 2027 The track width between the Camp de Tarragona and Castellón is changed, something that will affect the regional service of the R16 line. In order to continue providing this service, trains capable of circulating by two different widths, the standard width and the Iberian width will be needed. Therefore, Renfe has planned to incorporate a total of 14 more trains into the fleet of Catalonia.
Its incorporation, such as the rest of trains, is for the Minister “good news”, since it will translate into a decrease in incidents. “Citizenship asks for efficient public transport, and these are the investments they touch,” he said this Sunday.
