Paris, France.- Mexico closed its participation in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games with 17 medals, the last of which was for José de Jesús Castillo when he obtained Bronze in the 107 kg Para Powerlifting competition held at La Chapelle Arena.
Castillo, who had already won a medal in the 2016 edition of Rio de Janeiro, managed to lift 222 kilograms on his first attempt, enough to complete the podium on the last day of activity of the French competition. The Gold went to the Iranian Aliakbar Gharibshahi and the Silver went to the Mongolian athlete Sodnompiljee Enkhbar.
The athlete who put the finishing touches to Mexico’s performance in the French capital was Perla Patricia Bárcenas, who finished in seventh place in the 86-kilogram Para Powerlifting Final, her best lift in the competition being 130 kilos. With this medal, the tricolor delegation took home three Golds, six Silvers and eight Bronzes in its campaign in France.
Jesús Ángel Camacho was the top Mexican medallist in the competition, winning three medals, followed by Haideé Aceves with a pair of successes. The total haul is the fifth lowest in the history of Mexican Paralympic sport.
CHINA OVERWHELMS THE MEDAL TABLE, MEXICO REMAINS IN 30TH PLACE
China took the medal table by a landslide at the Paris Paralympic Games, where they won a total of 220 medals with 94 Gold, 76 Silver and 50 Bronze medals, followed by Great Britain with 124 medals and the United States rounded out the Top 3 with 105 medals. Mexico ranked thirtieth with its 17 medals in the event; in Tokyo 2020, the tricolor delegation had finished in twentieth place and in Rio de Janeiro they remained in 29th position.
