Even a message of peace can be misunderstood or exploited. It happens in Formula 1, also due to the great media echo that the Circus entails. And so is the livery of Sebastian’s helmet Vettel, made up of symbols of peace and all the flags of the planet, has sparked controversy. In particular, the presence of the banner of Northern Cyprus, a self-proclaimed territory recognized only by Turkey, not by the international community. After protests from the Cypriot motoring federation, Vettel decided to remove all flags from the underside of his helmet. The helmet continues to have the inscription No War and the colors of Ukraine, a country afflicted by war.
“Obviously I didn’t want there to be a need to carry this message. We pilots want to give a strong signal to show support for Ukraine, we met on Wednesday and thought we would use this opportunity to show unity“Said the four-time world champion at the test press conference in Bahrain. “It’s horrible what’s going on, it’s like a nightmare and we don’t seem to wake up. This is the reason my helmet design is quite simple but effective. As for me, I have decided to go in this direction. The only message of the flags was that of underline a united stance worldwide against war, but apparently there were some problems, so I took off the sticker. Some people got angry and therefore my message loses its effectiveness. I just wanted to communicate that the whole world should be united to fight against the war“.
