The Carter Center, a non-profit organization owned by former American president Jimmy Carter, delivered this Wednesday (2) to the Organization of American States (OAS) voting minutes from Venezuela’s presidential election, held on July 28.
According to information from the Efecto Cocuyo website, the documents were delivered by Jennie Lincoln, coordinator of the electoral observation mission that the Carter Center sent to Venezuela, during a special OAS session in Washington on the post-election crisis in the South American country.
It was not clear whether all the minutes of the July vote were delivered, but it is assumed that they are those that the Venezuelan opposition made available on a website shortly after the election, where copies of just over 80% of the records were published, proving the victory of the oppositionist Edmundo González.
“These minutes are the key. They were analyzed by the opposition and by independent international missions and show that they are the original minutes of July 28th and show Edmundo González as the winner with more than 60% of the votes”, said Lincoln at the session.
At X, the opposition leader, María Corina Machado, celebrated the presentation of the minutes – the post was accessed by People’s Gazette from a connection outside Brazil.
“The minutes arrived at the OAS! Jennie Lincoln, from the Carter Center, presents the original minutes that represent physical proof of Edmundo González’s victory, during his presentation to the OAS Permanent Council. The world knows what happened on July 28th; now you have the truth in your hands. Let’s free Venezuela!” he wrote.
The National Electoral Council (CNE), dominated by Nicolás Maduro, claims that the Venezuelan dictator won the election, which was ratified by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), also equipped by Chavismo. However, the two bodies have not yet released the voting minutes, which present the results detailed by electoral section.
Days after the election, the Carter Center had already released a statement in which it pointed out that the presidential election in Venezuela did not meet international standards of electoral integrity and, therefore, cannot be considered democratic.
