Cars, registrations flop in December: (almost) one million fewer new vehicles sold
New thud for the new car sales in Europe, held back by pandemic crisis and from shortage of chips, according to data published by manufacturers of Acea. In December – the sixth negative month in a row – the sale of new cars decreased in EU countries, Efta And Gb by 21.7% to 950,218 vehicles, while in the whole of 2021 the decline was more contained, considering the initial months of growth, of 1.5% to 11.7 million.
In the only European Union, the registrations they fell by 22.8% to 795,295 units. Looking at the whole year for the four main EU markets, only the Germany recorded a decline (-10.1%) in 2021. On the contrary, Italy recorded the highest increase (+ 5.5%), followed by Spain (+ 1.0%) e France (+ 0.5%) with modest growth.
In the last month of the year, most markets in the European region experienced double-digit declines, including the main four: Italy (-27.5%), Germany (-26.9%), Spain (-18.7%) e France (-15.1%). In fact, the only EU auto markets that expanded last month were Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia And Slovenia.
Overall, in 2021, the sales of new cars inside of of European Union decreased by 2.4% to 9.7 million units, despite the record comparison base of 2020. The decrease was the result of the shortage of semiconductors, which had a negative impact on the production of Automobiles throughout the year, but especially during the second half of 2021.
