In this episode of Carousel of the Arts we talk with the actor Viggo Mortensen, star of the latest film by Canadian David Cronenberg, the science fiction film that rocked the Croisette. On his side, veteran Chilean director Patricio Guzmán received a standing ovation at Cannes for his latest documentary, ‘My Imaginary Country’. We also went to meet the public at the Cannes Festival, which counts fans, film lovers and the curious.
The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most important and prestigious in the world. 21 films have taken part in the competition, but only one will win the Palme d’Or for best film. This year there has been drama, comedy and even an animal fantasy. But also a science fiction and body horror film, by Canadian David Cronenberg, perhaps the most visceral film of this edition.
Each year Cannes reserves its batch of surprises, controversies and a parade of artists. In 2022, the Croisette vibrated with the presence of Tom Cruise, who came for the premiere of the new ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. It had been 30 years since the American actor had been seen at the French Riviera contest, which reserved for him a warm welcome, a Palme d’Or of Honor and a tribute from the skies of the French Patrol.
The event was the scene for notorious protests, such as the denunciation against the war in Ukraine made by the Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, or the demonstrations against the rape of Ukrainian women and gender violence in France.
The Cannes Film Festival once again welcomed the Chilean director based in France, Patricio Guzmán, who was on the Croisette with his latest documentary, ‘My Imaginary Country’, presented at the Special Sessions. A job in which Guzmán set his sights on the massive protests that took place in Chile in 2019, the thirst for social change and the drafting of a new Constitution for the country.
During the Cannes Festival, nearly 100 films from all over the world are screened. A true festival of cinema that attracts many fans and onlookers to the French Riviera. See it in our report on the festival audience.
