The last and decisive round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia scheduled to take place in Monza until Sunday begins with a light but persistent rain. All 33 were present and expected to start the briefing with the race director Massimiliano Ghinassi, who also particularly underlined the sportsmanship and fair play aspects in a challenge that includes all the awarding of titles.
Naturally starting from the absolute one, which sees Masters, Ten Voorde and Klein involved at the height of a season which has often seen them face each other on the track (with even some maneuvers later sanctioned in the last round held in Vallelunga) and which hopefully is not conditioned or influenced by the conduct of other drivers.
In this sense, Ghinassi’s recommendations, in particular with the new entries from Monza (Rovanpera, Van Eijndhoven and De Hann), were very clear: avoid any misconduct (obviously), but also get yourself into possible trouble. Running with your brain on, in short.
Even more so since the First Variant is already feared by most, because the funnel of the first corner immediately after the start (and also any safety car restarts) evokes memories and pasts that are not always edifying here in the Temple of Speed. And it was definitely talked about between the protagonists and race management.
In short, we hope and trust that everything can take place in the most regular and sporting manner possible, while the last droplets of rain continue to fall on Monza which has in fact persisted in Brianza for well over 24 hours.
It’s an unexpected event that could. also mess up the plans of some teams and protagonists. Not only because a free practice session in the wet (although with all eyes on the horizon we still hope that at least half of it could take place on dry or almost dry surfaces) would influence the work on setting up the cars and the driving feeling of the drivers in sight. especially about tomorrow morning’s qualifying, but also because there are some small “cases” related to the wildcard tires to consider.
Meanwhile, the situation, which could also prove to be quite important in the general economy of a weekend that promises to be very tight. For the overall title, they have a complete set of new Michelins available plus both Masters and Ten Voorde.
Klein, on the other hand, would only have two more tyres, perhaps to be able to use as support, having already requested 10 (the maximum allowed for the season is 12) in the five previous stages.
Having said that in the Michelin Cup all three contenders (Fenici, De Amicis and Gnemmi) have a complete set at their disposal, it is necessary to consider which wildcards requested in Vallelunga were actually used in the race. Because if they aren’t fitted at the start, it means having new extra Michelins available that you can use in today’s free practice here in Monza (only on Fridays therefore, only those requested on site can be used in the race).
According to what was requested from Vallelunga, the “advantage” could concern both Ten Voorde (who had asked for 4, therefore a whole set) and Klein, who in turn had requested 2 and it seems that he did not use them in the two matches played on the Roman circuit (and in any case his race 1 lasted one corner as a result of contact with the reigning champion…).
Of course, with the drizzle continuing to fall, the wildcards will fall out of the day’s topics, but if the free practices take place at least for the most part in dry (or almost dry) conditions, they will certainly be useful to someone…
