In a crazy whirlwind of emotions and “monster” times, the qualification for the last round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia 2024 rewards the new entries in the front row and in particular the new record holder of the Brianza track with the latest generation 911 GT3 Cups.
Robert De Haan, guest of this appointment with the Target Competition team, which aims straight to close the discussion for the team title, obtained the pole position for race 1 today at 3.50 pm (live on Dazn and www.carreracupitalia.it) in 1’47″650, a time never achieved before by the “992”.
The 18-year-old Dutchman, best rookie of the 2024 Supercup, beat his compatriot Huub Van Eijndhoven by 551 thousandths of a second, who was still an excellent second and on the front row, also making his first appearance in the Italian single-make series with BeDriver.
The real “hot zone” for the championship begins from the second row. Sharing it are the two contenders Keagan Masters, third at 6 tenths with the 911 GT3 Cup of Team Q8 Hi Perform, and Larry Ten Voorde, fourth with Fulgenzi Racing just a few thousandths behind his South African rival.
Everything is at stake, therefore, for the title, which among other things will also see (barring unforeseen circumstances) a Masters in pole position in race 2 on Sunday with Ten Voorde third.
The other title contender is Marvin Klein, who qualified sixth on the third row with Target Competition, 8 tenths behind De Haan and behind Oliver Gray, excellent fifth in the top-5 with Ombra Racing.
The first Italian in qualifying is Diego Bertonelli, seventh with TDE and just a second behind his teammate Horst-Felix Felbermayr, protagonist of a truly positive qualifying, Janne Stiak, ninth with Target Competition, and Simone Iaquinta, who completes the top-10 with Prima Ghinzani, while his teammate and two-time rally world champion Kalle Rovanpera finished 22nd with an interesting time (1’49″473) for the first time in Monza and on slick tires (yesterday the Finn was able to lap only with rain tires).
The session was interrupted several times with a red flag and some riders had even very competitive times canceled due to track limits (De Haan himself, but also Ten Voorde, Rovanpera, Cerqui, Hall and Bertonelli).
The first twist concerned the Michelin Cup. As soon as he left the pits at the start of the session, in fact, Paolo Gnemmi had to stop the Ebimotors 911 GT3 Cup at the Roggia due to a technical problem (to be confirmed whether it was with the engine), losing the entire round and starting the weekend on an uphill climb which sees him fighting for the category title with Alberto De Amicis and Francesco Maria Fenici.
The other Ebimotors standard-bearer in turn experienced a thrill when he went off the track and touched the barriers at Ascari, fortunately without serious damage but still causing the first red flag. In any case, the reigning champion managed to earn pole in the Michelin Cup and now in race 1 he has the chance to attack Fenici’s lead in the standings.
The Raptor Engineering driver follows second and precedes Cesare Brusa (Prima Ghinzani), Stefano Stefanelli (Team Malucelli) and Horia-Traian Chirigut (Villorba Corse) in the category.
The further three red flags which interrupted today’s qualifying on several occasions (but always for a few minutes) were caused by the gravel left on the track at Ascari after a few too many track limits, by the contact between Armanni and Laurini which also occurred in that section of the circuit with the former forced to stop off-track and finally, with the checkered flag already out, by Hall’s exit at Lesmo 2.
A full course yellow was instead exposed after about ten minutes due to an off-piste by Stefanelli at the Roggia.
