Robert De Haan is certainly nothing new in the world of “Cups”, but his debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia this weekend in Monza is destined to make some noise. If nothing else because in qualifying he tore up the entire competition, including the one competing for the title on the Brianza circuit, setting a truly impressive lap record of 1’47″650 and earning himself a starting position for the eagerly awaited race 1 of today (3.50 pm, live Dazn e www.carreracupitalia.it).
It is the fastest lap ever with this Porsche model in the Temple of Speed, among other things almost reaching 280 per hour before the braking of the First Variant. Certainly the conditions and temperatures were ideal for trying to attack the record (in 2022 in the Supercup Harry King lapped in 1’48″753; in the Carrera Cup Italia in 2023 Keagan Masters scored the pole in 1’49″481), but the 6 tenths given to the aspiring 2024 Masters champions and Larry Ten Voorde surprised well beyond expectations.
This 18-year-old Dutch boy, already on the crest of the wave in the Porsche Supercup, where he was the best rookie in 2023 and in the Temple of Speed he had also signed the pole of the last seasonal event held on 1 September on the occasion of the GP ‘Italy, without too many doubts, recounts this morning’s exploit: “We succeeded together with the Target team, they gave me a super car that made it possible. I felt an excellent feeling with the car, I was confident and this shows how fast we were”.
“Now, though – continues De Haan –let’s focus on the races, where we have to try to win as many points as possible for the team (who are playing for the Team title, ed.). Monza is a nice track and I had already done an excellent qualifying here in the Supercup, but the race didn’t go as well. Now we’re back and we’re on pole again, this time we have to finish in front. Today the weather is perfect, no rain, I’m just focused on what I have to do…”
