From first to third in the general standings and only an eighth place in race 2. Alberto Cerqui’s weekend at Imola in the third round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia 2021 was decidedly complicated. The driver of the Q8 Hi Perform team, absolutely still in the race for the title, he had started well with the best time in free practice and then with the third in qualifying, with the regret of having exceeded the limits of the track at the Variante Alta in the lap that probably would have allowed him to overtake both Amati and the poleman Giardelli.
The real negative turning point of the weekend on the Santerno circuit was when, fighting for victory or podium, in the final of race 1 he came into contact with Festante, who was trying to put him on the Tosa. The consequent spin with a touch against the barriers forced the driver from Brescia to 18th place.
Starting from the ninth row, in race 2 Cerqui drove with determination recovering ten positions and finishing with the only points in Imola, those of the eighth place: “It wasn’t the weekend I wanted, it’s a pity because I knew I was very competitive here and the team had done a great job to allow me to have a highly performing car. In the championship standings, without considering the gaps, I am now third but certainly the episodes of race 1 did not allow me to realize the real potential of the technical package and the car. I am already projected to the next race (Vallelunga, ed) after the summer break to continue the fight for the title “.
