Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said that the club’s presence in the tenth place in the English Premier League is unacceptable and is due to the team’s mismanagement.
Liverpool achieved its lowest total points after 20 matches in eight years, which is a full 29 points less than its tally at the same stage of the title-winning season in 2019-2020.
And while it may be due to many factors such as the long list of injuries in the team, Carragher still believes that Liverpool can compete to finish the season in the golden square.
He said before the Merseyside summit match against Everton next Monday: “It is unacceptable for Liverpool to be in tenth place in the league with the presence of the current coach and the constellation of players.
“Despite the bad season, Liverpool can still compete to enter the golden square, and it should not be in the position it is currently in.”
The 3-0 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend left Liverpool 11 points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United.
“Everyone asks, ‘What’s going on at Liverpool?'” Carragher said. “If Jurgen Klopp doesn’t know, we don’t. Klopp has tried many different things.
“The problem with Liverpool is that the club hasn’t been lucky with injuries, there has been mismanagement of the squad. The relationship between Jordan Henderson and the Liverpool fans has been strained lately but he did his job.
“He’s 31 now and he’s won it all. He shouldn’t be playing every week now, but with the team’s mismanagement he’s playing week in and week out. Liverpool’s squad has either old players or young players.
“They did not get any player at this wonderful age between 25 and 29 years old, and Klopp bears the responsibility, as well as his supporting team.”
Carragher also criticized the Fenway Sports Group, which owns the club.
“They did a great job but the big mistake they made is that they allowed this team, which everyone in Europe said was a role model in buying and selling players, to disintegrate,” he said.
“A great team that everyone tried to emulate has been allowed to fall apart.”
