New Orleans.- Derek Carr threw for three touchdowns and the New Orleans Saints scored on their first nine offensive possessions during today’s 47-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams each rushed for touchdowns, and Blake Grupe kicked four field goals — two from more than 50 yards away — in a remarkable debut for new Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
The Panthers, who finished 2-15 last season, made changes to their front office, coaching staff and roster in hopes of showing more promise this season. But this season-opening game couldn’t have gone worse for new head coach Dave Canales and second-year quarterback Bryce Young.
Young finished 13 of 30 on completions with 161 yards and two interceptions – both by safeties Will Harris and Jordan Howden.
Carr completed 19 of 23 passes for 200 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown pass to Rashid Shaheed on the opening possession. Carr also connected on touchdown passes to tight ends Foster Moreau and Juwan Johnson on receptions of 3 and 16 yards, respectively.
