Former president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) Carlos Arthur Nuzman was sentenced to 30 years and 11 months in prison for having participated in the scheme that involved corruption in the victory of Rio de Janeiro as the host of the 2016 Olympic Games. unveiled in Operation Unfair Play, which investigated the buying of votes.
The sentence was handed down this Thursday (25), by judge Marcelo Bretas, head of the 7th Federal Criminal Court, which concentrates the crimes of Operation Lava Jato in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to Nuzman, who was fined R$1.6 million, former governor Sérgio Cabral was also sentenced to 10 years and eight months in prison, and former Rio-2016 Committee director Leonardo Gryner, to 13 years and ten months in prison.
In the sentence, which has 57 pages, Bretas stuck mainly to Nuzman, who was convicted of crimes of passive corruption, belonging to a criminal organization, laundering of assets, evasion of currency and material competition. According to a complaint by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), Nuzman would have obtained illicit enrichment in a few years, having been discovered that, between July 2014 and September 2017, he “hidden and concealed the origin and ownership of 16 kilos of gold, in the value of BRL 1,495,437.63, arising from illegal activity, upon acquisition and maintenance not declared in a safe in Switzerland.”
For the judge, Nuzman’s behavior was reprehensible. “The culpability is high, as Carlos Arthur Nuzman was the main creator of the illicit scheme examined in these records and thus acted taking advantage of the high position achieved over 22 years as president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, which is why his conduct must be valued more rigorously than that of any corrupt person”, said Bretas. “The convict dedicated his public career to making Rio de Janeiro the host city for the Olympics, however, despite such social responsibility, he chose to act against morality and public property”.
Despite being sentenced to a closed regime, the judge allowed Nuzman to appeal in freedom.
Nuzman’s defense was sought to manifest itself, but until the publication of this matter, he had not yet made a statement. The other defenses have not yet been contacted by the report.
