Mexico City. A cardiac catheterization, like the one performed on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is a test for the diagnosis and/or treatment of various cardiac pathologies. It is usually done through the radial artery (wrist) or the femoral artery (groin). According to the Cardiology Nursing website, one or more thin catheters are inserted and advanced into the aortic artery where the coronary arteries and chambers of the heart meet.
Various websites explain that a special dye (contrast medium) is injected through the catheter so that X-ray images show the heart clearly. This procedure can help find out if the blood vessels to and from the heart are narrowed or blocked and diagnose the degree of involvement. This medical test also determines whether the heart is pumping blood properly. Mayoclinic notes that doctors may recommend the procedure if you have irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), chest pain (angina), or heart valve problems, among other things.
