Zurich, Switzerland.- Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz has withdrawn from the World Cycling Championships in Switzerland due to a family emergency.
Carapaz, the best climber in this year’s Tour de France, said on Monday that he must travel to Ecuador to accompany his daughter who underwent emergency surgery.
“In the last few hours, I have been forced to travel to Ecuador urgently to accompany my daughter, who had to undergo emergency surgery,” Carapaz said in a statement. “Fortunately, the surgery went well. However, she still requires care.” “Given this family emergency, I have not been able to train for several days and my condition is not up to what Ecuador deserves, neither physically nor mentally. For this reason, I have made the decision not to participate in the 2024 Zurich World Cup,” he added.
The men’s road race will close the world championships on Sunday.
Carapaz, 31, won the road race at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but was not selected to compete in Paris this summer to defend her title. He was the first Ecuadorian to win a Grand Tour title, the 2019 Giro d’Italia. He has won stages at the Giro, the Vuelta a Espana and the Tour de France.
