Theft inside parked cars has become a long-standing problem for the city of San Francisco. According to data from the local police department between May 2020 and May 2021 he registered a 753% increase in robberies of objects from the cars. A problem that the mayor of the Californian city wanted to tackle in a drastic way, putting a sort of bounty on car thieves. Thanks to a privately funded fund, the Mayor offers rewards of up to $ 100,000 for anyone who can provide information or help in arresting robbers.
According to the mayor’s office, the gangs and local bands they are contributing substantially to the increase of this phenomenon, so much so as to force the first citizen of San Francisco to try to take this path as well to stem the situation. “Frequent car thefts in San Francisco are not victimless crimes, they have real financial and emotional consequences for the victims and we are continuing to work to identify the people who commit these crimes and arrest those responsible”, said Mayor London Breed in a recent statement. “These break-ins harm our residents, especially working families who don’t have the time or money to deal with the effects, as well as visitors to our city whose experiences are too often clouded after such an incident.”
Lately a car dashacam filmed one of these thefts: as can be seen from the images spread on Twitter, the thieves almost always act in pairs, with one of the two making the break-in by appropriating bags, backpacks and any valuables that can be found on the seat or inside the parked cars while the other, with the car in motion, ensures a quick escape route to the accomplice in case of need. Who knows if the mayor of San Francisco will be able to stop the scourge of car thefts with this collaboration incentive.
