More and more often in Italy we find ourselves facing cases of car theft. The phenomenon is clearly increasing, and the data released by LoJackan American company part of the giant CalAmp, leader in telematic services and in the recovery of stolen vehicles, lo they confirm: in 2023 we witnessed an increase in incidents of this type of 5% compared to the previous year.
Growing phenomenon
More and more often they are the SUVs to end up in the sights of so-called car thieves, so much so that today more than half of the cars stolen in our country, 53% to be precise. From this point of view we are talking about exponential growth: just four years ago, in fact, models in this segment represented 33% of all car thefts in Italy. Speaking of modelsthose who end up most in the sights of thieves are among the Fiat Panda, Fiat 500, Citroen C3, Lancia Ypsilon and Smart Fortwo cars, while among the SUVs we find Toyota RAV4, Toyota C-HR, Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade and Peugeot 3008.
Red Sea crisis risk
At the level regionalthroughout last year Campania, Lazio, Puglia and Lombardy accounted for 90% of criminal episodes. “Once stolen, these vehicles follow different end markets”, explains LoJack, referring primarily to domestic resale or transportation to other Eastern European countries for a new owner. The American company itself seems to fear one thing in particular: that the crisis that is taking place today in the Red Sea, with the consequent slowdown in the flow of spare parts, could cause another an acceleration of total and partial thefts of vehicles.
LoJack's commitment
“The phenomenon of vehicle thefts in our country it knows no crisis. From our report at the beginning of the year it emerges that the trend is once again growing strongly and in the coming months the need for missing components in the production industry and for spare parts could generate a new significant increase in partial and total thefts. Last year, thanks to our technology (capable of detecting vehicles in places where other systems are less effective such as containers, basements and garages), field research conducted by our Security Team and our always operational centre, we reported home 2,476 vehicles, for a total value of over 82 million euros – commented Sandro Biagianti, LoJack Security Director – On average, especially in cases where the owner notices the theft promptly, we are able to detect, locate and support the police in recovering the stolen car, on average, within 9 hours of theft”.
