Numerous emergency services arrived after a driver broke through the fence of an airport with his car. A passenger describes oppressive moments.
Weeze – There were moments of shock caused by a driver on Saturday evening at Weeze Airport in North Rhine-Westphalia. Because the vehicle broke through a security fence, the airport was unceremoniously closed and a passenger jet was immediately diverted. But as it turned out shortly afterwards, the driver had not acted in the spirit of an attack.
Attack can now be ruled out: car breaks through airport fence – police with first details
As a spokesman for Weeze Airport explained on Sunday at the request of the dpa, the car had first broken through a fence near the runway. This prevented the landing of the Ryanair passenger plane and the plane was immediately diverted to Münster / Osnabrück Airport. The on-site flight operations were briefly suspended temporarily. Since an attack could not be ruled out immediately, the police moved to the scene with a number of emergency services.
As the Kleve police announced on Sunday, however, an attempted attack can now be ruled out. Rather, the 59-year-old driver of the car at the wheel suffered a medical emergency, for which reason he broke through the airport fence with his car. The car rolled along a side lane of the runway until it was stopped by security forces.
Weeze / NRW: Car drives through airport fence – passenger reports anxious moments
Weeze Airport was closed for around 40 minutes from 8:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, as the airport’s spokesman confirmed to the dpa. About one and a half hours after the planned arrival in Weeze, the flight concerned was able to land at the airport after its stopover. As the WDR reported, citing a reporter, the plane had initially circled the airport several times. One passenger spoke to the reporter about not having a good experience. During the landing approach, the pilot pulled the machine up again.
As a police spokesman for the dpa confirmed on Sunday, in addition to the medical emergency, alcohol was also found in the blood of the driver of the car. Despite the emergency, he must now expect criminal proceedings for dangerous interference in air traffic. The 59-year-old is currently being treated in a hospital, but according to the spokesman there is no danger to life.
The death toll continues to rise after an airplane crash in Russia. However, authorities still cannot say for sure how many people were seated on the plane.
