BRASILIA (Reuters) – President Jair Bolsonaro commented this Thursday on the words of Archbishop Orlando Brandes of Aparecida, who in a sermon on the holiday of Our Lady of Aparecida defended a homeland without weapons, and said that cars, doctors and soldiers also kill, , as well as armaments,
“Weapon kills? Woods. Car also kills. The doctor can also kill. The military can also kill. That happens. Now, a weapon is not in the hands of the wrong person, a military man or a malformed doctor, it kills”, said the president in the weekly live transmitted by social networks.
On Tuesday, in one of the religious ceremonies on the occasion of the Day of Our Lady of Aparecida, Archbishop Brandes defended the construction of a homeland without weapons, hatred, fake news or corruption. The priest made reference to the official slogan of Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, “Pátria Amada Brasil”.
“Because today is Children’s Day. Let’s embrace our poor and we also embrace our authorities so that, together, we can build a Brazil ‘Beloved Homeland’. And to be a beloved homeland, it cannot be an armed homeland”, said Brandes, during the religious celebration.
Bolsonaro was not present at the time, but later, on the same day, he even attended a mass celebrated by the Archbishop in the same place.
“At the mass I was there, he didn’t say that. If he wanted to speak, he could, it is his right to speak, it is his right to be disarming”, said the president in the live broadcast.
“I just wanted him to answer: what does a pope’s bouncer use? That’s all, nothing else. Use flowers, use what? Or does it use heavy weapons?” asked Bolsonaro, who has armamentism as one of his main banners.
