Capea announces his retirement from the arena: he will cut his ponytail in the same square as his father

Two decades have passed since Pedro Gutiérrez ‘El Capea’, son of Niño de la Capea – a great figure in bullfighting – became a bullfighter at the Malaga Fair at the hands of Javier Conde and in the presence of Julián López ‘El Julie’. Piglet was called the horn of the ceremony, from Daniel Ruiz’s livestock. The date: August 16, 2004. That same year, on December 5, his father would confirm him in La México, where the ‘Niño’ has been ‘King’. Amigo, by Teófilo Gómez, was called the bull; Armillita Chico acted as a witness.

That season had been presented at La Glorieta in September. At the Salamanca fair he had a famous one-on-one with Eduardo Gallo, with a three-way tie. Days later, in an interview with ABC, he spoke about his weapons like this: «My concept is to keep my hand very low, drag the muleta and fight back towards the hip. “That is the bullfighting of a lifetime, the eternal one.” Regarding the impressions and advice that the teacher gave him, he commented: «He was happy, he told me that a difficult ballot had been saved, but that many errors had to be corrected. The first one who knew that was me. My father gives me advice not only in bullfighting, but in other areas of life. “You not only have to be a bullfighter, you have to be a person above all.”

Now, this noon in Fitur, he has made his retirement from the arena official: it will be on August 15 in Guijuelo, the same square where his father cut his ponytail at the age of 69. “I want to claim the importance of my generation,” the teacher said then. For his farewell, his son will be enclosed with six bulls from different farms, two with the iron of his house: Carmen Lorenzo and San Pelayo. The other four will be from Victorino Martín, Puerto de San Lorenzo, Domingo Hernández and El Freixo (owned by El Juli).

Capea junior confessed to feeling “very excited about the bullfight.” “It is going to be an unforgettable moment for me and my family, an afternoon in which I have chosen Guijuelo, because of the great relationship that unites us with this bullfighting fair and because of the good treatment that this town has always given us,” he stressed in an event that was attended, among others, by his father, the mayor of Guijuelo and his attorney.
