Boulos, Datena, Tabata and Maria Helena lamented the violent outcome of a debate that had been notable for few conflicts
The candidates who participated in the debate promoted by Grupo Flow for the City Hall of São Paulo on Monday night (September 23, 2024) regretted the episode of aggression at the end of the event. The case involved an advisor to the businessman Pablo Marcal (PRTB) and the mayor’s campaign marketer Ricardo Nunes (MDB), who left the recording studio covered in blood after being punched.
“What a load of crap, huh? […] Pablo Marçal has been inspiring this aggression and inciting violence since day zero. His advisors are at his command, provoking, insulting, and pointing their cell phones in people’s faces. What happened now cannot be normalized.”said the deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB) in an interview with Flow after the debate.
Other candidates also criticized the incident. In a live broadcast published on his Instagram profile, Marçal said that his advisor Nahuel Medina was attacked by marketing expert Duda Lima, who runs Nunes’ campaign, and reacted in “self-defense.” The businessman was expelled from the debate shortly before the punch for breaking the rules by repeatedly insulting Ricardo Nunes.
Read other statements:
- Guilherme Boulos (PSOL): “This type of violence is not compatible with politics – and, by the way, Marçal came from the beginning to cause trouble, we saw that. He is Ricardo Nunes’s sacrificial lamb. […] In the end, in the final considerations, Marçal took the opportunity to criticize Ricardo Nunes – I was there and I saw the two of them insulting each other – also provoking off the microphone, and this turned into a terrible aggression, regrettable for the city”;
- Jose Luis Datena (PSDB): “It’s like a mafia movie, the bad guy always appears at the end. Then things get distorted, it gets complicated. [Carlos] Tramontina is to be congratulated for conducting the debate. It was going at such a good level, it could have continued like that.”;
- Marina Helena (New): “What happened in this debate is unacceptable, especially at the end. An aide to a candidate attacked another aide, and the person leaves here covered in blood. The best thing to do was for an ordinary citizen to arrest this guy. […] A physical aggression like this, recorded, for everyone to see, is unacceptable, from any side. It is intolerable”;
- Tabata Amaral (PSB): “What a load of crap, huh? Pablo Marçal has done it again. We had a debate that would go down in election history as the one with the most talk about proposals. And my reading is that when Pablo Marçal is not putting on a show, his little shit show to show off and make money, he has nothing to say.” […] Pablo Marçal has been inspiring this aggression and inciting violence since day zero. His advisors are at his command, provoking, insulting, and pointing their cell phones in people’s faces. What happened now cannot be normalized.”
The episode marks yet another case of violence in the São Paulo elections. On September 15, Datena threw a chair at Marçal at an event promoted by TV Culture and was expelled from the debate. The former coach was taken to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital, but was discharged the next day with minor injuries.
