Several federal states are banning Christmas markets due to the number of Corona cases. However, experts fear that this will increase the risk of infection.
Berlin – The dispute started a year ago. Outdoor socializing is a minor problem in the pandemic, some say. No, corona infections can also occur there, say the others. Numerous Christmas markets in Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia have therefore been canceled. The number of cases is too high.
However, aerosol researchers consider this to be “counterproductive”. “From an aerosol-physical point of view, a ban on Christmas markets makes absolutely no sense. Very few infections take place outdoors, ”said Gerhard Scheuch, the former president of the International Society for Aerosol Medicine world.
Corona: Christmas market ban and curfews “counterproductive”
From the point of view of the President of the Society for Aerosol Research, Christof Asbach, the opening of Christmas markets, where sufficient distance can be maintained, is justifiable. “I fear that a general closure will increasingly lead to people meeting indoors in private, which significantly increases the risk of infection,” Asbach also said world.
The two researchers are also critical of curfews for unvaccinated people in pandemic hotspots. “This suggests that the dangers lurk outside, but the opposite is the case,” said Scheuch. They are absolutely “counterproductive”.
Asbach considers the efficiency of curfews to be “very controversial”. Avoiding contact in indoor areas is important, and this applies all the more to corona-unvaccinated people due to the greater risk. In view of the currently drastic increase in the number of new infections with Sars-CoV-2, Lothar Wieler, head of the Robert Koch Institute, is already warning of a fifth wave of the pandemic in Germany.
