What happened to Ferrari? Leclerc very angry, Sainz saddened, Vasseur with a face that looks like a question. In a few days we went from the jubilation of Monte Carlo to the puzzle of the eve of Montreal, where Charles (11th) and Carlos (10th) will start in the sixth row, well away from the protagonists of the qualifications. The reason for the unimaginable setback? Lack of adhesion, with the pilots’ complaints via radio: “We’re not fast enough”, whispered Leclerc, adding an indigestible consideration with his hands still: “We were slow”.
As to why, with a car that notoriously has a high downforce and a great engine, which is really needed in Montreal, one can only hypothesize that there was an error in the setup of the cars which affected the never optimal temperature of the tyres, resulting in reduced grip. Which doesn’t mean that all is lost, on a circuit where overtaking, unlike Monaco, is possible in several places. Furthermore, in the distance simulation, the Ferraris performed well in both dry and wet conditionsa very important factor with the uncertain weather which could mix the cards even more after qualifying as beautiful as it was unpredictable, in which Verstappen returned to the fore with the best performance, but not enough to earn the pole position, which went to George Russell with an incredibly identical time, but made a few minutes earlier.
That is, Red Bull returned to the front on a track theoretically unfavorable to it and Mercedes – at least here – took back the stage, even if Hamilton sadly placed seventh, distanced from his teammate. And what about Ricciardo, even fifth with the former Alpha Tauri which today has a name that is not well understood?
In short, let’s expect a grand prize for the cotton gun in which anything can happen. Red Bull wants to get back to the front, Mercedes plays on surprise, McLaren (3rd Norris, 4th Piastri) can now win anywhere and Ferrari aims to find itself with many hopes of doing so. A few hours and there will be verification.
