Car editor Niek Schenk answers: ‘I advise against that. It can cause the engine to stop starting. For example, it must first be vented by a technician. Furthermore, the fuel pump can be damaged by overheating. The petrol in the fuel tank also acts as a cooling system for the fuel pump. When the petrol is running low, the fuel pump will draw in air. Finally, dirt and grease collect at the bottom of the tank. If you empty the tank, the fuel pump will suck up this mess, with the same risk of a stalling engine or damage.’
