Modern cars are controlled not only by the driver, but also by the electronics, which, as you know, need to be rebooted. How often should this operation be performed and why?
Any computer cannot work for a long time without rebooting the operating system and without clearing the accumulated errors from the RAM. The engine control unit in the car is no exception.
During long-term operation, it happens that the memory is full of all sorts of erroneous signals. The ECU issues false codes, signaling various non-existent faults. As a result, the electronics get confused and stop working normally. Yellow lamps appear on the dashboard, indicating that the self-diagnosis protection has been activated. The reason for this is malfunctioning sensors. As a result, in order to get rid of the problem and remove errors, it is necessary to reset the computer memory and return it to the factory settings. How to do it correctly and not harm the vehicle?
False and True Signals
All modern cars are equipped with an electronic control unit (ECU), or rather a computer that monitors engine parameters and stores them in memory.
Resetting the memory and settings of the electronic unit can and should be done about once a year, but with the observance of a number of precautions that help reduce the risks to the electronics.
If the malfunction really exists, then it will immediately make itself felt again. Thus, critical errors that seriously affect the operation of the engine cannot be reset. These are messages about such faults as:
- incorrect operation of the camshaft angle sensor;
- knock sensor failure;
- problems with oil pressure;
- throttle valve malfunction;
- malfunction of the catalytic converter;
- misfiring, etc.
The computer is rebooted by completely disconnecting the power supply. It’s much easier than everyone thinks and doesn’t require any special knowledge.
Disconnecting the battery terminal
In inexpensive cars of domestic brands, as well as in foreign cars of the budget segment, the ECU is reset by disconnecting the battery.
It is necessary to turn off the engine, open the hood and remove the positive terminal from the battery and wait about 15 minutes or more for the computer’s operating memory to completely clear the accumulated information.
Then you can reconnect the terminal and carry out a tricky operation with the ignition.
It will be necessary to turn the key in the lock to the second position without starting the engine, in which all systems of the machine are supplied with power, but the starter has not yet worked. At this point, the ECU scans the vehicle systems. Then you need to turn off the ignition and turn it on again. Then the ECU system will restart.
However, after clearing the memory, you need to let the machine re-tune. To do this, you need to drive at a speed of 20-25 km / h several hundred meters in the yard without active acceleration. The ECU will automatically diagnose the electronics within a few minutes and make work corrections.
Mobile phone scanner
There are more complex ways to reboot the ECU using a special scanner. It can be bought on the Internet at the online platforms of global retailers. The scanner is a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi head that plugs into the OBD2 electronics scan connector. At the same time, a specialized diagnostic program for the machine is downloaded to the smartphone and you can start studying the errors.
The program has a set of templates for correcting false alarms of sensors. One click restarts the computer.
Thus, the adapter allows you to monitor the state of the power unit and other systems of the machine in real time even while traveling.
