A common type of footwear in summer that can pose a risk while driving
When driving, many doubts arise, practical actions, which are not taught in driving school. One of them is whether you can drive with flip-flops, a shoe that is common to see in summer to better deal with the heat. An action that, although it does not seem dangerous, can cause an accident.
The General Directorate of Traffic does not take a clear position on whether carrying out some activities such as driving with flip-flops or without a shirt is prohibited, since they are not actions that by themselves can pose a safety hazard.
According to the DGT, in the General Circulation Regulation there is an article that defines these cases: article 18.1 explains that “the driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision and permanent attention in driving”. In this article of the law it can be understood that, although driving with flip-flops is not prohibited, they cannot be used if they impede the driver’s freedom of movement. In this case, the use of this shoe can cause it to stay below the brake pedal and not be able to fully depress it. It can also be dangerous, since not being tight to the foot, it can come off in some movement or get stuck, causing an accident. The Civil Guard explained through its social networks that driving with flip flops can be a reason for a sanction.
Although wearing them while driving the car is not a danger in itself, the authority can proceed to report the facts if they detect that it is a dangerous attitude that affects driving. So it will also depend on the type of footwear used, since there may be models that do not affect the control of the vehicle and do not pose a danger.
