It couldn’t be. After a week playing a dream golf game in Sotogrande, Jorge Campillo He could not add one more victory for Spanish golf. A Julian Guerrier in a state of grace and nine playoff holes crossed his path that ended up being an ordeal for him. This high number equals the longest on the European Tour in its history: the Dutch Open won by José Mari Olazábal in 1989 and the Spanish Open by Raphael Jaquelin in 2013.
Both players started the day tied and in the regular holes they experienced everything. There were advantages for the Frenchman and also for the Extremaduran, who came to enjoy a two-stroke advantage in the last flags and, what is worse, started the last hole with one advantage. At that point he only had to secure par against an opponent who had just saved himself from the water in his most recent shots, but he was not able to. The ‘bunker’ that protected the cloth swallowed his ball and Jorge did not leave it on the ‘green’, which in the end cost him a ‘bogey’ that sent him to the playoff, given that Julien did not miss with the short club. Curiously, the man from Cáceres had not made any errors in 65 holes previously and in the last seven of the day, he made three.

In this way, the two headed towards an extra time in which the watchword seemed to be not to fail. The two golfers were marking each other but when one fell into trouble, the other did not take advantage of it. As if that were not enough, the ‘putter’ abandoned the Spaniard in those moments, as he acknowledged resignedly when finishing. «I don’t know what happened to me, but nothing has entered me in the ‘play-off’. It was clear that today was Julien’s day and that he had the luck of champions: we can only congratulate him. “I feel good and eager to win soon.”
The Frenchman, for his part, made good use of his options, especially the one that opened up for him on the extended ninth hole, which was a carbon copy of the previously mentioned 18th. Once again Campi went to the beach (this time in a previous trap) and again failed to successfully get the ball out. He made the ‘bogey’ again and Guerrier had a last three-meter shot to win his dream tournament in which a whole world crossed his mind. “I was very excited when I prepared for that blow, because I remembered my family and everyone who has helped me in my career,” he declared emotionally. And it has taken him 229 tournaments to win his first trophy after a professional career full of ups and downs.
He had previously concluded his performance Jon Rahmfor whom a lap of minus five did not leave him satisfied because “I have been quite irregular and I have not felt very comfortable. I would have liked to have been a little higher to have been able to win, but it was not possible. It was my last tournament of the year and in general I am happy, with two victories and the LIV ranking, the team title and three top 10s in the three tournaments in Spain,” summarized the Basque.
