We can really hide that we have been looking forward to getting our hands on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2? Let’s be honest: it’s since Modern Warfare of 2019 that we could not wait to return to play with that modern and tactical gameplay, which sets it apart from the most recent Black Ops Cold War and the unfortunate Vanguard. This is precisely why we have been looking forward to testing the multiplayer betawhich has reserved a very interesting amount of news and pleasant surprises for us.

Available in preview for PlayStation users and then also on Xbox and PC, the beta offered everyone the chance to experience Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer with almost all of its modes. Among these, we also discovered gunplay, weapons, customization, the new third-person mode and many, many interesting new features.
The event Call of Duty Next showed us how the franchise and its line-up are about to change dramatically: between Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2.0, CoD Mobile and Warzone Mobile, Activision is showing enormous faith in its IP. In doing so, he clearly differentiated each chapter of the series and, in the huge scheme, Modern Warfare 2 presents itself as the center of the classic multiplayer experience and the campaign.
While clearly we haven’t been given the chance to get our hands on the new story yet, what we’ve seen in multiplayer has really convinced us a lot. All modalities tried – from the classic team deathmatch to the new third person moshpit – they showed a huge potential, and they can keep us glued to the screen for many hours in the company of our friends. The modalities stand out for variety and quality, although we are sure that we could also be satisfied with the quantity, which is why we look forward to the official release to be able to learn more.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 in third person: yes or no?
Let’s now open a parenthesis on which many have found themselves discussing, always reaching conflicting conclusions. Among the new features of Modern Warfare 2 there is a mode moshpit in the third person, which we talked about earlier, which allows for the first time in the series to play with this completely different point of view. Let’s start by saying that we are fairly convinced of this introduction, for various reasons: first of all, the idea is certainly interesting and offers strategic implications that we cannot ignore. Play Call of Duty in third person changes the gameplay and the approach to combat in a rather pronounced wayeven making the user’s immersion in the map different.
However, there are some points that we did not appreciate very much and which, in our opinion, could really weigh heavily on the enjoyment of such a radical novelty. Chief among these are gods animations of our soldier not always avant-garde and often too coarse for a work of the caliber of CoD. There is no need for an expert: to make a third-person mode for a first-person game, it is not enough to move the camera away but you must necessarily correct all those animations that did not need perfection before.
Another flaw, but which we recognize to be purely subjective, is the fact that when you aim for precision the view returns to first person. This, in development, requires a compromise to be reached: either the camera has to move very quickly so as not to waste the player’s time (but clearly risking confusing him) or the process is slower and the gameplay slows down accordingly. Let’s take a more effective solution, taking as an example the good old Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It’s so crazy to think about adding a command to quickly change the precision aim from the third person view (as happens in Fortnite or in the Gears series, to give references) to that in first person, so as to give players the possibility to choose how they are most comfortable?
Gunplay and gunsmith 2.0
The gunplay is also very interesting, which radically moves away from the classicism of Black Ops Cold War and from that bittersweet mix that Vanguard was, and continues what was done in 2019 with the previous Modern Warfare and Warzone. The gameplay is slower but also decidedly more tactical, where the strategic use of weapons and equipment can make a difference in almost any situation. Having a good aim will not be enough and it will be necessary to know how to make the best use of both the equipment available and the teammates.
In this sense, listing all the news that we discovered during the beta would be really difficult and a single article would not be enough, but there are some interesting additions that we cannot fail to pay homage. First of all, some new ones are very interesting pieces of equipment tactical and lethal, starting fromamazing grenade that can go through walls and eliminate many opponents thanks to the mere conscious use of strategy. To make the happiness of many there is also a good part of the equipment already present in the previous Modern Warfare, which makes its return with a long series of improvements.
The amount of weapons present, meanwhile, for the moment it is quite satisfactory, although unfortunately our time available was objectively too little to be able to test them all and analyze the balances. For example, the default M4 is definitely too weak compared to other similar rifles, which is why the new gunsmith comes into play. Compared to what could have been done previously, to unlock some weapons in particular we will first have to level up with another of the same type, but less performing. Let’s take an example: to unlock the M16 in game we must first respect some specific parameters with the M4.
As you may have understood, the gunsmith system in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is decidedly more complex and articulated than what we have seen in the past and trying every single weapon in a few days of beta is nothing short of a difficult task. All the more reason, however, this gives us security than in the full version of the title we will really have a lot to play and discovernot forgetting the classic weapon customization system that offers even more variety in the player’s hands.
What happened to the iconic maps?
As for the gameplay we were therefore more than satisfied with what we have tried so far – and that was enough to raise our expectations of Activision’s work – but unfortunately, it was the maps that did not fully convince us. Don’t get me wrong: the work done is certainly very well studied and calibrated, but we would have liked to review some iconic scenery of the caliber of Rust.
In terms of level design, the development team is paying a lot of attention to diversifying spaces and environments well, as well as distances and main points of interest on the map. What we have not seen is the right variety between one level and another, and we have been somewhat satisfied with rather similar scenarios. We therefore hope that in the full version of the title there is the right diversification and perhaps those unique maps that we will be able to remember with pleasure even after many years.
A promise called Modern Warfare 2
To come to the very first conclusions, we are really happy to be able to say that we place great hope in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Finally we can play a title in the series that boasts a phenomenal attention to detail even in multiplayer, where almost nothing is left to chance. For obvious reasons, there are still some things that need to be fixed or even revised such as third person mode, as well as the overall balance of weapon stats will need to be updated, but no doubt Infinity Ward is on track. In fact, we can’t wait to get our hands on the full version of the game, when it is released towards the end of October.
