A great white shark is believed to have killed the man in California. A study published in October shows how poorly the great white shark sees and therefore confuses people with seals.
E.in Surfer was killed in a shark attack off the California coast. The man was discovered on Friday by a surfer lifeless in the water off the coast of San Luis Obispo County, said the coast guard. According to initial investigations, the man had apparently recently been attacked by a great white shark. The authorities have now identified the surfer, the news channel CNN reported.
The stretch of coast was closed to all water sports enthusiasts and swimmers immediately after the body was recovered. A surfer was last attacked and injured by a shark in the area in January 2019.
Shark attacks on humans are very rare. Last year there were slightly fewer than 60 shark attacks on humans. When it comes to this, it is mostly a mix-up. One from the UK science magazine “Journal of the Royal Society Interface” A great white shark study published in October this year confirmed that great white sharks’ eyesight is poor. On the other hand, they can perceive odor and sound waves over great distances.
According to this, the great white shark can hardly distinguish between colors and shapes. Because of their movements, swimmers and surfers are mistakenly mistaken for their usual food, such as seals.
