There California Energy Commission (CEC) approved a $ 1.4 billion three-year plan so that it can achieve its goals in terms of electric vehicle charging and hydrogen refueling network, all by 2025. The plan should allow the construction of a state-owned infrastructure for zero-emission vehicles, allowing Governor Gavin Newsom to move closer to the very ambitious but still gradual ban on the sale of new vehicles powered by fossil fuels.
Almost eighty percent of the funding will go to electric charging or hydrogen refueling stations. The remainder of the amount will be allocated to producing electric vehicles in the state, as well as training and developing the workforce. The desire to become pioneers in the United States and around the world fits perfectly with the campaigns that have already characterized California in the past, although the larger cities have received criticism from industry players such as Elon Musk (who complains of a certain bureaucratic slowness in relation to the installation of his Tesla supercharger network).
California will also pay attention to public and heavy transport, foreseeing the upgrading of the infrastructure for a thousand school buses, a thousand buses and 1,150 trucks, all of which are ‘zero emissions’. In total, there will be 314 million dollars for charging infrastructures reserved for light electric vehicles, $ 690 million for infrastructure needed for medium and heavy vehicles, $ 77 million for hydrogen refueling infrastructure, $ 25 million for the production and supply of ‘green’ fuel, $ 244 million for electric vehicle manufacturing, $ 15 million for training and workforce development. The Californian government has said that the funds will be available over the next two years, after which they will be distributed to selected projects.
California usually ‘guides’ other American states towards similar decisions regarding pollution and transport regulations: if this is the case again, President Joe Biden will also benefit.
