The scheme has been set up for people who became ill at the beginning of the corona crisis and can no longer work since then. Normally they should be discharged after two years of illness. With the new arrangement they can be kept in service for at least six months longer, reports Minister Conny Helder. The ministry does not cover all costs.
This way we can keep these incredibly important people for care, a sector that is struggling with major shortages of personnel
“Because the greatest risks were incurred in healthcare at the time of contact with infected people, and because there was less room for reintegration due to the high pressure on healthcare, we offer healthcare employers temporary support to help healthcare workers with long-term complaints after a Covid. – to keep infection in service for longer,” the minister said in a statement about the arrangement. “This way we can retain these incredibly important people for healthcare, a sector that is struggling with major shortages of personnel.”
Employers are not reimbursed for all costs to keep healthcare employees on board, says the Ministry of Health. Part of the costs incurred by employers for recovery and reintegration are reimbursed. After the second year of illness, the employer must extend the employees’ contracts for at least six months and also pay the salary as it was in the second year of illness.
The new scheme is being set up for healthcare staff who fell ill between March and December 2020. The trade union FNV, among others, had requested such a scheme because the two-year period for those employees will soon expire, allowing employers to fire them. The exact details are still being worked out, according to the ministry.
