The president of the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF), Francisco Egas, assured this Thursday that his body does not rule out taking legal action against the National Association of Professional Soccer (ANFP) of Chile for the effects caused in their complaint of the Byron Castillo case.
‘The impact is great’
“The affectation is great both to the name of the country, as well as to the name of the federation, as well as to that of our authorities and, of course, that of the player,” Egas said on the Radio La Red station, where he reiterated that Ecuador has not breached any regulation.
“If (the case) lends itself to initiating any legal action to repair all this damage, have no doubt that we will pursue it because we are really hurt by what the ANFP of Chile has done,” insisted Egas.
In May, the ANFP of Chile denounced Ecuador before FIFA for an alleged improper alignment of Byron Castillo in the South American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a maneuver with the intention of reaching a quota for the World Cup in the event of a possible sanction. for the Tricolor.
The complaint is based on the fact that Castillo presented alleged false documents in the trial held last year, where his nationality and his Ecuadorian origin were confirmed, after years of doubts and rumors that he was born in Colombia.
“The Federation was very careful in this case. While the player had a dispute about the consistency of his documents, not about his nationality, the Federation refrained from summoning him,” Egas recalled.
“Once the decision of the Ecuadorian Justice and the competent bodies was final and indicated that the player should have all the rights of any Ecuadorian citizen, there was no reason not to summon him,” he added. The top leader of the FEF assured that both the ANFP and the lawyer hired by it, the Brazilian Eduardo Carlezzo, “have been little responsible.”
“It saddens me a lot because what has been set up is a media circus around this issue, mainly by the ANFP and its lawyer, who seems to believe that this game is played from the media and sowing doubts in the public,” he added.
Egas pointed out that “the documents that we see that Chile and that the Chilean media present again and again are the same ones that were used during the process that ended with the decision of the Ecuadorian Justice to grant Byron a clean registry and documents that prove his nationality, without the possibility of questioning”.
“Chile may have included in its letter (to FIFA) a million assumptions and topics, especially taken from social networks, which were also part of the judicial process, but there has been no official investigation on the subject,” Egas stressed.
“It would be illogical to think that FIFA can resolve the matter without an official investigation, taking only into account what could be recorded in the ANFP of Chile’s letter,” he added.
The president of the Ecuadorian Federation affirmed that his team is prepared to defend its position in all instances that are necessary, since “Chile has anticipated that it will appeal if there is a decision favorable to Ecuador.” Once the resolution of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee comes out, the case can be reviewed by the Appeal Committee and, if any party is dissatisfied with that second verdict, they can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Egas indicated that he does not know if the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) has sent any position, since he understands that their approach was “totally abstract from the subject, play their playoff that they earned on the field and not intervene in the subject.”
