The by-election for the Rajya Sabha seat vacated due to the demise of Lok Janshakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan will be held on 14 December. The Election Commission has announced this. Ram Vilas Paswan’s term as a member of the Upper House from Bihar was until April 2024. He died on October 8.
Notification on 26 November, 14 December Voting
The notification for the Rajya Sabha by-election will be issued on 26 November. The nomination will be held on November 3 and will be scrutinized on November 4. Nomination can be withdrawn by 5 November. After this, voting will be held on December 14 from 9 am to 4 pm. According to the prescribed provisions, the counting of votes will take place in the evening of 14 December.

Paswan’s tenure till April 2024
Ram Vilas Paswan won the Rajya Sabha by-election last year. NDA’s ally BJP had offered this seat to the leader of Lok Janshakti Party. The seat fell vacant after Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and went to the lower house. Paswan was the only member of the LJP in the Rajya Sabha. His term was until April 2024.

Ram Vilas Paswan was an eight-time Lok Sabha MP, currently a Rajya Sabha MP when he died. He first reached the Lok Sabha in 1977 as a Janata Party candidate from Hajipur Lok Sabha seat. He then reached the Parliament of the country in 1980, 1989, 1996 and 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2014 as a member of the Lok Sabha.
