The Minister of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, Pablo Bustinduyhas sent a letter to the Minister of Defense, Margaret Roblesto request the suspension of any arms sales contracts in progress with Israeli companies.
According to sources from the Ministry that directs Bustinduythe letter, sent on behalf of “the five ministries of Sumar”, refers to “some contracts” that are still in progress, despite the fact that Spain has not authorized any new operations in this regard since October 7.
As it has already done “repeatedly and constantly” both formally within the coalition Government and in public statements, this part of the Executive requests that, in this way, “the total arms embargo on Israel” becomes effective.
“Our obligation is to redouble our efforts and do everything in our power to stop the ongoing genocide what is being lived in Loop“sources have pointed out.
In the letter, Bustinduy remembers that the International Court of Justice has noted that States have the obligation not to contribute to the situation created by Israel’s presence in occupied territories and to ensure the end of any impediment to the exercise of the right of self-determination of the Palestinian population, as well as to Israel’s compliance of the international law.
This results, according to the letter, in the obligation to cease the supply or transfer to Israel of weapons, ammunition and related equipment when there are reasonable grounds to suspect that they may be used in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Issue to which the Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 13 with the favorable vote of Spain, the letter states.
In it, Bustinduy refers to the commitments of international law and “the concern of a very significant part of Spanish citizens“, aggravated by the invasion of Lebanon and the attacks on the UN peacekeeping mission in which Spain participates.
Based on this, he asks Robles for a urgent review of trade relations with “companies involved in the production of goods and/or provision of services related to defense and security linked to Israel.”
and ask for your permanent suspension“due to the continuous and evident violation of international law by your Government.”
In short, the letter states, they request “the suspension of any contract or agreement in progress with Israeli defense companies and/or security that are linked both to the escalation of the conflict in Gaza and Lebanon and to operations in all of the settlements illegally occupied by Israel in Palestine.
