Juarez City.- The coordinator of the Border Business Block (BEF), Jesús Manuel “Thor” Salayandía Lara, indicated that the northern border of Mexico needs special attention from the Federation and that, during the visit of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, they will propose the creation of a Secretariat of Border Affairs.
Given that the visit of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and the president-elect is expected on Friday of next week, Salayandía Lara pointed out that being on the border with the United States implies enormous challenges and opportunities, which is why attention is required at a national level.
“It could be proposed now that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum come together to create a Secretariat for Border Affairs to deal with very specific issues at the border,” the businessman said.
He added that the opportunities represented by the border could be better exploited with special, focused and well-studied incentives, which would require a lot of communication between the Federation and this border area between Mexico and the United States.
“Here on the border, from Tijuana to Matamoros, we have the largest exports, more than a third of the country’s total. Everything that the border represents for the GDP and, now more than ever, we must strengthen the alliance with the United States in the T-MEC,” he said.
He added that issues of security, migration, social violence, femicide, drug and human smuggling, among others, are easier to combat by strengthening the economy of this region, and that this is one of the reasons why the government invests special resources in this area.
“I think that President Sheinbaum has this openness because she is creating new secretariats in her work plan that she has been presenting. It would be very interesting to have special communication with the Federation to give competitiveness to the border and deal with immigration issues,” he said.
He pointed out that Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar, as well as the rest of the border municipal presidents and federal deputies of said districts, should have a special place in this secretariat.
Although there is no clear agenda so far and it is not known if there will be any event between AMLO and Sheinbaum with businessmen or any other sector, the business leader indicated that the means will be sought to convey the proposal to the future federal executive.
