Thousands of Volkswagens, but also Porsches, Audis, Bentleys and Lamborghinis would be brought by boat from Emden, Germany, to the port of Davisville in the United States. Felicity Ace, flying Panamanian flag, ran into problems more than 300 kilometers off the coast of the Azores when a fire broke out.
The entire 22-person crew was removed from the ship by helicopter during the fire and evacuated to the island of Faial, 170 kilometers away. The Felicity Ace was left adrift in the Atlantic Ocean.
The ship eventually sank as it was ravaged by violent waves. That came as a surprise to the shipping company, says a spokesperson.
Rescue Attempts
The Dutch salvage company Smit Salvage sent people and tugboats to the cargo ship. On Friday, February 18, people from Smit were said to have already been on board, who stabilized the ship. The rescue attempts ultimately failed. According to the shipping company, there is no oil pollution in the region yet.
On board were about 4000 cars, including 1100 Porsches and 189 Bentleys and Lamborghinis. The cars are probably all lost. It is estimated that the cars on the ship were worth 393 million euros.
