The 100 billion euro package for the Bundeswehr has been decided after the Union and traffic lights have agreed. The vote in the Bundestag will follow on Friday.
Update from June 1st, 9 p.m.: There is practically nothing standing in the way of Olaf Scholz’ special assets for the Bundeswehr. In a special session in the evening, the Defense Committee approved the use of the 100 billion euro package for the Bundeswehr. As planned, the Bundestag can finally vote on the special fund on Friday.
Actually, there should already be clarity on Wednesday morning, but the Union still saw “a few question marks” and thus arranged a special session in the evening (see first report). However, the traffic light coalition had delivered the “clarifying documents” required by the Union for the procurement list of armaments, said CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt on Wednesday evening.
As the picture reported, there was still a small adjustment. It has been newly determined that the repayment of the loans taken out by the fund of up to 100 billion euros should begin on January 1, 2031 at the latest.
Bundeswehr special fund: Union “blocks” first, Greens attest “chaos”
First report from June 1st, 4 p.m.: Berlin – The defense committee has to meet on Wednesday evening for an unscheduled meeting to approve the list of armaments projects for the special fund for the Bundeswehr.
The time for examining the projects worth 100 billion euros was too short, said the CSU defense politician Florian Hahn on the Phoenix broadcaster. Green MP Agnieszka Brugger was “very surprised” and spoke of “chaos” in the Union.
The Defense Committee had discussed the list in the morning. However, the Union “blocked” an adoption, according to traffic light circles. Therefore, there should be a special meeting of the committee in the evening. When it should actually start was unclear until the afternoon. The times were 6:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. If the green light is given, the Bundestag could finally vote on the special fund on Friday.
Bundeswehr special fund: CSU sees “a few question marks”
Hahn said there were “a few question marks”. Such a project cannot be knitted “with a hot needle”. He did not want to give details of the Union’s reservations. However, he is confident that the package can be passed this week or, if necessary, in the coming week. The Union is “absolutely willing” to support the project. Despite the lurching course on Wednesday, it is likely that the Union will ultimately agree.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced the special fund at the end of February after the start of the Ukraine war. It is intended to eliminate massive equipment shortages in the Bundeswehr. A two-thirds majority is required for the planned amendment to the Basic Law. Therefore, the traffic light parties need the approval of the Union. According to the armaments list, most of the funds from the special fund, at 40 billion euros, are to be used for the Air Force. The concrete price list of the Bundeswehr at a glance. (as/AFP)
