Bullying Teaching emotional skills is promised to 7th graders in Vantaa

After the academic year, the success of the teaching is evaluated before any further decisions are made.

Vantaa is adding teaching of emotional and interaction skills to the order of 7th graders.

Emotional skills would be taught half an hour a week from next fall throughout the next school year 2022–2023.

Emotional skills are learned through various practical exercises, says the deputy mayor of education and learning Katri Kalske.

“We learn to interpret different emotions, identify emotions in ourselves and others, and strengthen intellectual capital,” characterizes Kalske.

After the school year, the success of teaching emotional skills is assessed before any further decisions are made.

Increase the lessons are funded by project funding from the state ministry of education and culture to reduce absenteeism, combat bullying at school, and support student well-being.

Vantaa has received a total of EUR 760,000 from this project for the development of binding school community work (sky) over two academic years. Vantaa’s self-financing is one-fifth of these amounts.

Of this very extensive and ambitious well-being program, the teaching of 7-grade emotional skills covers only part of the funding, ie 160,000 euros.

Emotional skills instruction may be given by a class teacher or another subject teacher teaching the class. The content of the teaching will be planned during the spring.

Vantaa the city government has just confirmed a new program of measures to prevent and address school bullying, which will be articulated in the daily life of schools during the spring.

The Board of Education and Learning will discuss the teaching of 7th grade emotional skills on Tuesday.
