NThe government of Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov could fall this week. That would also be a heavy blow for Bulgaria because three parliamentary elections were needed in 2021 – in April, July and November – in order to be able to form a cabinet at all. Only after the third election did Petkov succeed in negotiating a four-party coalition, which is now passé again. The party “There is such a people”, ITN for short, led by a dubious talk show host and pop singer, recently left the coalition.
The reason was a dispute about money. ITN wanted to get almost two billion euros for infrastructure projects, while bypassing control mechanisms – a proven recipe in Bulgaria for robbing European funds. Petkov and his associates were elected to end precisely such practices. They had to resist the greed of their partners if only to maintain their credibility with their own constituency.
