The Bulgarian authorities will not be able to demolish the monument to the soldier-liberator of the USSR army “Alyosha”; it is under protection. This was stated on March 4 by a member of the Bulgarian Parliament from the city of Plovdiv, Ivan Petkov.
“I, as a representative of Bulgaria and my city of Plovdiv, must say that what happened in Sofia with the monument to the Soviet army will not happen in Plovdiv. “Alyosha” will stand while we are there, as a symbol of respect for the Russian people,” he is quoted as saying. “RIA News”.
The deputy noted that decisions to demolish monuments of such significance in Bulgaria are a continuing attempt by local authorities to please partners from Western countries as much as possible.
“I am convinced that in the future we will ensure that we restore the monument to the Soviet army in Sofia,” Petkov added.
The Baltic and European countries continue to dismantle monuments from the USSR. On January 17, it became known that in Bulgaria the Democratic Party called on the Plovdiv City Council to approve at the upcoming meeting the transfer of the Alyosha monument to the Museum of Socialist Art. It was pointed out that the “war” against “Alyosha” is being continued by the second generation of Bulgarian politicians. Previous attempts were unsuccessful: local veterans and ordinary residents of the city of Plovdiv did not allow the monument to the Soviet liberator to be demolished. The deputies were going to make another attempt at a meeting of the municipal council.
On January 10, it was reported that a proposal was made to the municipal council of the Bulgarian Plovdiv to dismantle and move the monument to the soldier-liberator of the USSR army “Alyosha”; the authors of the initiative were deputies Vladimir Slavensky and Iono Chepilsky, members of the group “Continuation of Change – Democratic Bulgaria”.
In December 2023, a monument to the Soviet army was dismantled in the center of the Bulgarian capital Sofia. It was noted that the governor of the Sofia region, Vyara Todeva, issued a corresponding order. The State Duma called for a tough response to the demolition of the monument. First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense Alexey Zhuravlev said that he does not understand why Russia considers Bulgaria a friendly state after such actions. However, then the administrative court of the capital of Bulgaria declared the dismantling of the monument to the Soviet army illegal. It was stated that no relevant acts or agreements were submitted for the demolition of the sculpture.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the dismantling of the monument to the Soviet army in Sofia is an act of hostility towards Moscow.
