The four-story neo-Renaissance house was built by Jörn’s grandfather Otto Donner and it was designed by an architect Magnus Schjerfbeck architect by Sebastian Gripenberg based on sketches. The residential apartment building was completed in 1889.
An apartment building in the courtyard are two smaller buildings, architect Waldemar Aspelin designed, so-called studio building from the beginning of the 20th century and now a protected empire-style wooden house.
The latter is characterized as one of the oldest, if not the oldest surviving wooden house on the Helsinki peninsula. The designer of the house, completed in 1839, is unknown.
The Empire tree house and also the apartment building are protected in the plan with a strict sr-1 designation, and the studio building with an sr-3 designation.
Empire wooden house protection has been discussed for a long time. Helsingin Sanomat has followed the process in its various stages. Public interest has been directed to the house, for example, when Jörn Donner’s son, the writer Raphael Donner looking for a caretaker for the property. A natural advantage would be an apartment in an empire wooden house, where the predecessor has also lived.
Rafael Donner, who sits on the board of the housing company, said at the time that the property manager was expected to speak Finnish, Swedish and English, as many of the residents of the apartment building’s nine apartments are multilingual.
An understanding of maintenance work was also considered an advantage, and even more specifically an understanding of how to protect a valuable property as part of everyday work.
