Brussels last a plan to stop importing Russian fuels

The European Commission will approve in two weeks a “road map” with “concrete measures” to definitively cut the supply of fuel by Russia. After the invasion of Ukraine, the EU, which depended virtually exclusive to that country, was reducing dependence, but is still imported around 18% of fossil energy. With that money, in Brussels they are aware that Kremlin’s war machinery continues. Recently, the energy commissioner, Dan Jorgensen, put figures: the imported thing equals 2,400 new fighters.

The president of the Community Government, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced that in two weeks she will present a plan to total disconnection. “We will stop depending on a hostile power for our energy needs,” he said at a conference at the Summit on the future of energy held this Thursday in London.

The plan has been delayed, however, since it was planned to be presented in the first 100 days of the mandate, a deadline that has already expired. The energy manager admitted that the delay is due to the difficulty in carrying it out. “If it had been easy, it would have been achieved three years ago,” Jorgesen said in reference to the invasion of Ukraine. The objective is that the total disconnection is in 2027.

“At the beginning of this decade, we depended excessively on a single supplier to meet our energy needs. Russia provided 45% of the gas, 50% of coal and almost a third of oil. For decades, we failed to recognize the costs that this dependency entailed. The risk of blackmail, economic coercion, price shocks … that reality was discovered after the large -scale invasion of large scale Ukraine, ”said Von der Leyen:” Russia tried to take advantage of our excessive dependence cutting the gas.

“They failed,” added von der Leyen, who explained that the supply was diversified, thanks to the US gas or Norway: “We accelerate the clean energy transition. We pass from 45% of our gas imports from Russia to 18%. We pass from one in five barrels of oil to one in every fifty, a reduction of ten times. And we pass to zero coal.”

“We have reduced the financing of the Russian and strengthened economy our energy security,” added the German, who has admitted that “there is still more to do.”
