The European Commission recommends that Moldova and Georgia also be considered candidates when entering the community club
The European Executive has recommended this Thursday the candidacy of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to the European Union (EU). The reports carried out by Brussels show “great progress” in the three countries in political and economic matters, steps that bring them closer to Europe. In the case of Ukraine, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has assured that “it is moving in a very good direction”. However, she stresses that the country “still has a lot of work to do” to meet European standards and demands major reforms from the Zelensky government.
Regarding the rule of law, Von der Leyen pointed out that the country has already developed a body to fight corruption, “now we just need to start it up.” The safeguarding of Fundamental Rights is another of the key aspects of the demands of Brussels. “Ukraine has fulfilled 80% of the recommendations. What remains is the adoption of a law that protects national minorities », she pointed out.
The president of the European Commission has already conveyed all these considerations to the Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelenski, during his trip to kyiv ten days ago. The leader, for his part, conveyed to Brussels his total willingness to meet the necessary requirements to be part of the EU. “We understand that, while the war lasts, the country will not be able to meet all the requirements -Von der Leyen has admitted-, but we believe that it should be considered as a candidate to enter the EU”.
The Community Executive has also recommended that Moldova and Georgia be given ‘candidate country’ status. The final decision will be made by the European Council at the next summit to be held on June 23 and 24.
