Bruno Sacco, during his career as chief designer of Mercedes-Benz, created iconic models such as the Class E series 124the S-Class series 126the Mercedes-Benz 190 (W 201) and the SL R 129 series.
Its guiding principle, “A Mercedes-Benz must always look like a Mercedes-Benz”has influenced the design of generations of vehicles. Joined Daimler-Benz AG in 1958worked there his entire career, becoming a respected figure in the automotive industry.
Who was Bruno Sacco?
Bruno Sacco, born in Udine in 1933, was one of the most influential designers in the history of the automobile. After graduating as a surveyor and studying at Polytechnic of Turin, began his career at Ghia bodyworkwhere he developed a strong interest in automotive design. In 1958, Sacco joined Mercedes-Benz, where he would leave an indelible mark for the next four decades.
In the 1975was appointed head of the design department, succeeding Friedrich Geiger. Under his leadership, he helped create some of the automaker’s most iconic models, including the 126-series S-Class, the Mercedes 190 (W 201), the 129 R-series SL and the 124-series.
In addition to his attention to aesthetics, Sacco has introduced innovative elements such as side protective strips on Mercedes models, and gave great importance toaerodynamic efficiencycreating vehicles with a clean and functional design. During his time at the helm of design, he oversaw the expansion of the model range, with the launch of the A-Class, the SLK and the CLKalso aiming at a younger audience.
Sacco retired in 1999leaving a lasting legacy in the automotive world. Among numerous awards, he received one honorary degree from the University of Udine and admission to Automotive Hall of Fame. Sacco has always stated that “Mercedes was my life, and I dedicated myself 100% to it.”
