Brown and Horner, is it peace?
Is peace made between Zak Brown and Christian Horner? So it would seem, at least judging from what the CEO of McLaren published on social media the night after the Singapore GP: the American entrepreneur posted a selfie with the Red Bull team principal, taken inside the plane on which they both traveled to return to Europe after the race. The two are smiling, with Brown showing his thumb towards the camera and, regardless of the fact that all the differences have actually been resolved, This is an undeniable sign of easing tensions after months of fierce controversy..
Brown calls out Netflix
“Peace has returned to Formula 1 – we read in the post published by Brown – on the flight home. Where is Netflix when you need it? The battle will continue on the track, what a great sport!”. Right at the checkered flag of the GP in Marina Bay, moreover, McLaren had complained about the Racing Bulls’ choice to help the sister team in the fight for the title, asking Daniel Ricciardo to return to the pits at the end to fit the Soft tyres and snatch the extra point from Lando Norris for the fastest lap. The joking reference to Netflix is instead probably related to the cameras of the docu-series Drive to Survivewho in the past have filmed and aired some of the tense moments between the two.
The controversy between McLaren and Red Bull
The insult of Ricciardo’s fastest lap – a ruthless move on a sporting level that however raises an ethical issue, given that Red Bull is the only team on the grid that can count on the help of a “B team” like Racing Bulls – was not in fact the only point of friction between Brown and Horner: In recent months, the American manager had repeatedly raised the issue of a possible conflict of interest between the Milton Keynes and Faenza stables and attacked for the affair of the infringement of the rules on the 2021 budget cap.
At the beginning of the year, then, even before becoming his direct rival in the fight for the F1 world title, McLaren boss had been among the most critical of the alleged sexual harassment affair which Horner had stumbled upon, speaking of damage to the image of the entire Formula 1 paddock. More recently, however, it was the English manager who had harshly attacked the Woking team over the issue of the flexible wings and the mini-DRS, banned by the FIA on the eve of the Singapore GP.
