Brooklyn: the plot of the film on Rai 1. What it’s about and the ending
What is the plot of the film Brooklyn, broadcast tonight, Monday 26 July 2021, at 21.25 on Rai 1? It is a dramatic film based on the novel of the same name by Colm Toibin which stars Saoirse Ronan as the young Eilis Lacey. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Non-Original Screenplay. But what is the film about? What’s the plot? And how does it end? Here’s everything you need to know.
Eilis Lacey, born and raised in a small Irish town with her mother and sister, wants more from life. The only job she has is that of Sunday in a small village shop, which certainly cannot guarantee her any future stability. So, in search of fortune and thanks to the support of her sister, Eilis decides to migrate to the United States of the 1950s and arrive in New York. She left her family in Ireland, convinced that she could return once her pockets were rich.
Arriving in New York after a long voyage by ship, Eilis goes to live in Brooklyn in a boarding school with strict rules. Her stay in America initially makes her feel homesick, the rhythms of the metropolis are unknown to her and the desire to go back becomes stronger and stronger, until Eilis begins to get used to it. He gets a job in a department store and gets a diploma as an accountant. In addition, in New York she meets Tony, an Italian plumber who ruthlessly courts her until he wins her over. Life goes smoothly for Eilis, until a phone call arrives from overseas: her sister is dead. Packed up in a hurry, Eilis is forced to return to Ireland after secretly marrying Tony and joins her grieving mother.
Let’s see the ending of the Brooklyn film together. Back home, Eilis is offered the chance that she had always been denied before she left for America: her sister has left a vacancy at the job that is promptly offered to her, plus she knows Jim Farrell who falls in love. of her and asks for her hand.
Eilis is torn, because by accepting the new turn of events she could stay at home, in her homeland, next to her mother, without having to deprive herself of family or even love. So, considering Jim’s proposal, Eilis in the meantime stops responding to Tony’s letters and thinks for a long time on the choice to make: to return to America or to stay in Ireland, giving a chance to the life she always wanted?
Her doubts are put on hold when a village lady, inviting her to have tea, informs her that she is aware of her marriage to Tony: her niece who lives in New York has confessed it to her. Eilis is cornered, but paradoxically she remembers why she wanted to leave Ireland: that small and mean place, closed in its own prejudices, put her on the run even more than the lack of love and non-existent work. His place, he now knows, is in the United States.
So the Brooklyn protagonist buys a one-way ticket for a ship bound for New York, greets her mother, leaves Jim and leaves to rejoin Tony. It’s been a while since she last saw him and she’s not sure she’ll find him there waiting, with open arms. During the long journey to America, Eilis meets an Irish girl who is ready for a new start in New York, just like she was before. So he gives her the information she needs to get used to the hostile Brooklyn as quickly as possible. The film ends with Eilis waiting for Tony outside of work: the two meet and she dives into his arms.
