Historical balance: not seen since Paris 1924
FROM THE ENCOUNTER IN TOKYO. The collection of bronze medals is enriched with a new piece: Antonio Pizzolato finished in third place in weightlifting, category up to 81 kg. The race was won by the Chinese Lyu Xiaojun, who lifted a total of 374 kilos between jerk and momentum, a new Olympic record, ahead of the Dominican Zacarias Michel Bonnat (367 kg). Pizzolato stopped at 365: 165 at the break and 200 at the momentum. At the last attempt, now sure of the bronze, he tried everything to get the gold, even at the price of sacrificing a possible second place, and loaded 210 kilos on the balance wheel. The attempt failed (it would have been a world first).
For Italy this is the third medal in the weights, after the bronze of Mirko Zanni (67 kg) and the silver of Giorgia Bordignon (64 kg). A balance that has not been seen since Paris 1924
Where did this exploit come from after a long time without results?
«We have a fantastic staff, a great group – replies the blue athlete -. A perfect circle where we work really well. We have nothing to envy to other countries ».
Has the fight against doping helped clean athletes?
“The cleaning has been done. And if there is still someone playing dirty, we face it clean. We fight with a clear conscience ».
Pizzolato is 24 years old. He was born in Castelvetrano, in the province of Trapani. His motto is “not who is stronger wins, but who is more stubborn”. «This time too it was a struggle – he tells himself with the medal hanging around his neck. All my races are. Results require effort, and I like fatigue ».
Any regrets about the result?
«At the moment, yes, I played all out to win gold. That’s how it went, next time we will fight again ».
