Assange, seen by his followers as a warrior of free speech, is controversial. He successfully applied for asylum at Ecuador’s embassy after two Swedish women accused him of assault and rape. When the South American country withdrew its support for him in April 2019, he was arrested. A British judge sentenced him to 50 weeks in prison for violating the terms of his bail.
Assange is in Belmarsh Prison pending his possible extradition to the US. Rebecca Vincent of the organization Reporters without Borders asks the US government of Joe Biden to drop the case. “To put an end to this hell,” she said. His partner and lawyer Stella Morris calls on the Supreme Court to let justice prevail: “What must be done to get Julian free?”
The Supreme Court takes four to six weeks to deliberate over the fate of Assange, who psychiatrists say is suicidal. If the judges rule in his favor and he is released, another problem awaits. Morris, mother of two of his children: “Find a country where we are safe.”
