Moscow and London agreed on the possibility of a visit by British Foreign Minister Liz Truss to Russia. This was announced on Saturday, January 22, by a source in diplomatic circles.
The Foreign Office of the United Kingdom, according to the source, had previously approached Russia with a request to arrange a visit by Truss.
“Moscow agreed to conduct a visit in February,” – quotes “RIA News» source words.
January 12 Times reported that the head of the Foreign Office is planning a trip to Moscow in early February.
Another interlocutor of the publication said that at the moment the British Foreign Office is not preparing such a visit.
The Russian embassy in the UK on January 12 criticized Truss’ remarks about alleged Russian aggression. The diplomatic mission added that “the repeated accusations are misleading.”
On December 11, Liz Truss said that at a meeting of foreign ministers of the G7 countries (G7) in Liverpool, they would discuss the creation of a united front against Russia’s policy towards Ukraine.
The last visit of the British Foreign Minister to Russia took place in December 2017.
Boris Johnson, who was then Foreign Minister and now Prime Minister of the country, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The media noted the friendly nature of the meeting between Johnson and Lavrov. Diplomats exchanged pleasantries and jokes.
Thus, Lavrov reproached Johnson for often expressing disagreement with the arguments of the Russian delegation.
Lavrov suggested that Johnson is trying to critically assess the words of representatives of the Russian Federation, since otherwise “his reputation among the media will be damaged in his homeland.”
Johnson then admitted to reporters that he was a staunch Russophile.
According to Johnson, London and Moscow should make an effort to build a good relationship. The two powers should not “sit on the sidelines and complain about each other,” the politician said.
